How to solve a 2x2 Rubik's Cube

In this tutorial you will learn how to solve a 2x2 Rubik's Cube using the Beginner's Layer-By-Layer Method.

About

2x2x2

The 2x2x2 Rubik's Cube, also known as the "Pocket Cube," is a smaller and simpler version of the classic 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube. It consists of only 8 corner pieces and can be solved more quickly due to its reduced complexity. Despite its smaller size, the 2x2x2 Cube offers a fun and challenging puzzle-solving experience, making it a popular choice for beginners and enthusiasts looking for a quick Rubik's Cube challenge on the go.

Step 1 = The First layer

The First Layer is the aim to solve a whole side with one colour (usually white) whilst also solving the bottom layer of the cube.

  1. To do the first step you need to find a white corner piece that has a blue and orange tile next to it.  - There are many different cases and vary between every solve. They are shown below.

Each step below will tell you how to solve each case:

  1. Then perform the algorithm R. If the white face is facing upwards do - R U2 R' and then do the steps previously mentioned.
  2. Do this for all the other corner pieces by performing the written steps above - position the piece so that the white side is on the top right or left of the blue face. Then perform the algorithm R or L.

Step 2 = Orient the top Layer

The Cases are shown below and then the following instructions show how to solve each case.

Algorithm = (R U R' U R U2 R')

  1. 0 Yellow Tiles on the top face = Perform the algorithm until a yellow tile is seen on the Top Face
  2. 1 Yellow Tiles on the top face = Move the yellow tile to the bottom right hand corner and then perform the algorithm - May need to do it more than once.
  3. 2 Yellow Tiles on the top face = Before you perform the algorithm make sure that one Yellow Tile or more is facing you or on the front face and then perform the algorithm - You will then need to repeat the algorithm again with the singular Yellow Tile by following the step above.

Step 3 = Permute the last layer

SOLVE THE CUBE

The steps for the last layer cases are shown below along with the cases.

ALGORITHM = R' F R' B2 R F' R' B2 R2 U'

  1.  Rotate the top face using algorithm U until one or two matching colours align with its bottom layer.

!Congratulations!

You’ve successfully solved the 2x2 Rubik’s Cube using the Beginner’s Layer-By-Layer Method!
